RULES OF THE ROAD LEARN THE LAW SERIES 8

Learn The Law Menu | Rear View Mirror

Did your parents ever tell you, “Don’t hang to many things off your rear-view mirror or you will get a ticket!" Well, that exact reason might not be enough to cause you to get a citation, but you need to make sure you can safely see out of your window, side mirrors and back glass at all times. Anything that obstructs your view is in violation of the law below, and in today's world that includes GPS and phone devices stuck to the front window, air freshers, or even books or folders piled up on the front dash.

Having an object either attached to the windshield or hanging from the rearview mirror, that obstructs the driver's view, can result in a dangerous situation. The driver might not be able to see another vehicle, animal, pedestrian or bicyclist because of an object is blocking their view. (And for those of you with a disability parking tag, keep your tag in a secured location when driving, and only put the tag up when you need to park.)

27-51-1401. Obstruction to driver's view or driving mechanism prohibited

(a) No person shall drive a vehicle when it is so loaded or when there are in the front seat a number of persons, exceeding three (3), as to obstruct the view of the driver to the front or sides of the vehicle so as to interfere with the driver's control over the driving mechanism of the vehicle.
